WHAT IS A BUNION?
A bunion is a sort of growth that can form on the joint of your toe. This is a serious condition that may start from a small growth and occurs due to displacement of the bones.
Although bunions are not genetic, there are possibilities of one inheriting genes that make your feet structure more prone to acquiring such a condition. However, this may not be the only cause of bunions. There are several other conditions that contribute to the cause of bunions which include
FOOT INJURIES
WEARING TIGHT-FITTING FOOTWEAR
WEARING HIGH HEELS
FLAT FEET
NEUROMUSCULAR PROBLEMS
PROGRESSION AND SYMPTOMS
Bunions initially form at the joint of your toe. It can occur due to the displacement of the bones in your toe as a result of pressure or strain exerted on the joint over a long period. The bunion once formed, creates friction between your footwear.
After some time, the movement of the angled toe and bunion starts to align its movement along with the other toes. This can induce more pain in cases where the second toe is being overlapped. Bunions are a condition that can do more damage if left untreated. These can become a leading cause of more risky conditions such as hammertoe, Bursitis, Bone spurs, and Osteoarthritis.
WHY DO I FEEL PAIN?
There are multiple reasons why someone with bunions experiences tenderness and pain due to inflammation. When the growth of the toe comes into contact with any footwear it induces friction which causes soreness.
Another reason for pain is that since a bunion may swell up every time the toe flexes it may hurt on every movement of the foot such as walking. As mentioned earlier, bunions are a serious risk and must be treated before an even greater condition is caused as a result. If persistent pain due to untreated bunions is not alarming enough you may be at risk of developing bursitis or arthritis. Arthritis can thus add to the pain that is caused by the bunions.
Can bunions only form on the big toe?
Commonly bunions only form on your large toe as the surface area is greater, most pressure is exerted on it while performing tasks.
Nevertheless, bunions can also form on the pinky of your foot. There is a special classification for such a condition known as a Tailor’s Bunion or otherwise known as a bunionette. The name originates from tailors who would initially have this deformity of the pinky toe when they spent hours working hard in unfitting postures with their feet rubbed against the floor. As a result, the bone of the pinky drifts away following the same pattern.
BUNION TREATMENT IN HOUSTON TX
The treatment for bunions is divided into two crucial aspects. The first is to reduce the force being exerted on the joint that is causing the inflammation and then the second aspect is to control the growth from further worsening.
Some of the methods commonly used by our podiatrists at vital podiatry to reduce pressure are orthotics, prefabricated or custom, and shoe modification.
There are however some less efficient yet helpful methods to reduce the pressure by doctors in case your case is less severe such as removing calluses, providing padding to use in all footwear to reduce the friction exercises, and restricting the design of footwear for the patient.
SURGERY FOR THE TREATMENT OF BUNIONS IN HOUSTON TX
Surgery is one of the most effective ways of treating bunions. Bunionectomy can quickly provide relief and is a safe procedure with a significantly higher success rate. Nonetheless, we at Vital Podiatry understand that surgery is an overwhelming idea that terrifies many patients. This is why it is the last resort to treat bunions for all those patients who could not feel relief from the pain and irritation through other methods of treatment.
